There is also Green Car (1st class) Puratto Kodama discount ticket available. Would you prefer Slow 1st Class? or Fast 2nd Class?

On the other hand, there is two-seater (yes, one seat in each row which means one-seat-aisle-one-seat in configuration) special luxury highway bus between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka. It is called COCOON on which you may get nice sleep in the night bus.

One more tip. Faster than Shinkansen is LCC (Low Cost Carrier), SKYMARK has imatoku and maewari fare for Tokyo - Kobe route. Not exactly Tokyo but Ibaraki - Kobe can be as low as JPY6,000-ish one way. More information for Budget Cheap Airlines. Bus? or Train? or Airplane? This page (in the bottom area) has some comparison chart.
